Happy 25th Birthday to my favorite album of all time! This is the one that changed everything for me and introduced me to rock music. It’s just as brilliant and intense to listen to today as it was in 1987. Nothing will ever beat the original 5 members doing their thing on Appetite for Destruction. There has never been anything else like it.

Magic Mike

Ok, we know, hot guys in a stripper movie that only girls will go see and enjoy (except for the few guys that got dragged there by their girlfriends). To be honest I went to Magic Mike because, well who doesn’t love Channing Tatum? I mean really. The only thing is Magic Mike isn’t a stripper movie at all. Well yeah it does involve a lot of oily men taking their clothes off, but there is a lot more to it than that. Lots of people don’t know that the film was actually directed by Oscar winning director Steven Soderbergh. He turns this movie into a lot more than just males running around shirtless and ladies fainting because of it. It shows a probably somewhat truthful image of what stripping is really like. And guess what! Its not all fun naked games. The men in the movie work 3 jobs plus stripping just to live. The film does a good job of showing the dangerous side that comes with the fast lifestyle (lots of drug abuse). It also shows that although some of the strippers don’t mind having a profession where they take their clothes off, others like Mike want a better life. Mike works very hard and saves up his money so he can someday stop stripping and lead a somewhat normal life. There are some pretty strong morals under all of the glitter and grease of stripping in the film. It also shows how drugs and other substances (some could argue that stripping is a drug for some of the guys in the movie) affect the guys and how it changes a person and almost makes them bitter and hard. Soderbergh does a great job of combining the glamorous world of stripping and the ugly side of it together in a subtle way that makes you react to it when you didn’t even realize it. Halfway through sitting in the movie you will realize that this isn’t really a stripper movie at all. There is a lot more feeling than bare ass. Magic Mike is nothing like what you would expect and I think that guys would enjoy it if they give it a chance.

Rock of Ages

I love 80s hair metal. I was raised on it and it was the foundation that I built my music obsession on. So, needless to say I was really pumped when Hollywood decided to turn out Rock of Ages. The movie is a lot different from the play, but I still enjoyed it. The movie was made to be more tame. There was still a lot of girls in stripper garb though. To be honest most of ye acting in the movie is pretty bad besides Tom Cruise of course. But it was nice to look at Diego Boneta for two hours. Russell Brand basically played himself in an 80s wig. He was probably my favorite part of the whole movie though. He had some good one liners. Alec Baldwin was cute with Brand and he didn’t sing half bad either. The best part as you have probably heard was Tom. He embodied the classic rock heroes of the 80s that fascinate me so much. He was really pulling a Motley Crüe act with Def Leppard style music. He was genius and it’s because he is a product of the 80s. He’s a method actor and he grew up in the age when all of this was hipe. It was pretty awesome and I would recommend you see it just for him. The rest of the movie was cheesy as hell, but weren’t the 80s cheesy? Like REO Speedwagon cheesy. That’s why the 80s were so great though. It was cheesy with lots of hairspray and leather and Rock of Ages really captures that era. I wish I could have been there to see the real thing, but Rock of Ages gave me a taste of it. And now I’m going to go listen to some Foreigner. God there was a lot of Foreigner in that movie. Not a complaint at all though!

The amazing Aerosmith concert I went to last weekend! They sounded great and Steven and Joe seemed to be getting along just find. I was a little worried that Steven’s voice wouldn’t sound good, but he sounded just as good as he sounded in the 80s. They performed a lot of their new songs too. The new album doesn’t come out until August, but the songs they did play weren’t that bad! Sometimes when rockers haven’t put an album out in forever all their songs sound well let’s be honest here the same and don’t compare to their old material. But Steven and Joe wouldn’t let that happen. Their new stuff sounded just like the old stuff. The same bluesy, energetic sound with Steven’s signature wale. I was highly impressed and seriously cannot wait until august.

Starting work this week, rock of ages comes out, and aerosmith concert on Saturday. What a great week! I got the Rock if ages soundtrack last week and it is pretty good. I was a little worried like the rest of the world about Tom Cruise singing the 80s classics that I was raised on. I love the broadway show but I have to say I like the movie soundtrack more. They got rid of some of the songs from the musical and I really think that was the right choice. They got rid of the songs that made you go what? What is this song? I don’t think I know it. There were definitely songs that I had to look up because I had never heard of them before. The movie takes those songs out and replaces them with songs like juke box hero, I love rock n’ roll, and rock you like a hurricane. People will be able to rock out more to the new songs and I can’t wait to see how the movie puts it all together. Another crazy part of the movie version is te fact that there is a gnr song! I couldn’t believe it! Cruise belts out paradise city like a pro! And I’m very impressed that Axl actually let one of his songs be used by someone else. Especially in a freaking musical! I cannot wait for this movie! Seriously I have been waiting my whole life for something like this! There will be more to come throughout the week!

Busy Busy Busy

SO, I know I haven’t been around a lot lately, but in my defense it has been a crazy last couple of weeks! This coming week is my last week of class and then I have finals week. I can’t believe I am almost done with my first year of college. Doesn’t feel real. This week has also been the Drake Relays so I have been plenty busy watching track events and people getting drunk. All week our student activities board has been planing activities and last night was there last thing: a concert. There were three bands and I have no idea who the first two were (local bands I’m sure) but my friends and I didn’t get downtown until about an hour before the big show. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus was the big one. I only know one of their songs ha not really what I listen to, but they were pretty decent. All of the guys in the group seemed happy to be there despite the rain. Oh yeah I forgot to mention it was pouring rain the whole night as soon as they took the stage. The show must go on though and RJA said they would keep playing if we wanted to stay. To which the numerous intoxicated college students just let out loud screams. So, they continued to play like troopers and us students continued to listen and jam around like idiots. Didn’t matter that it was raining. (Personally I will stay anywhere even in the rain if it means that I get to see music being performed live). Like I said before the band was really chill and the singer was great with the crowd. Their set wasn’t too long either, which my cold, wet self appreciated. And the guitarist was wearing a GNR T-shirt, so I have major props going out to this band now. Anyways after they finished everyone made a mad dash to stand at the bus stop, because the school had provided free busing for any student that was wanting to go to the event. And apparently when you slap the word “free” on anything in front of a college student they take it. There were a ton of people waiting in a huge clump for the one (I’m almost positive there was only one) yellow school bus. My friends and I were lucky enough to get on the second trip of the magic school bus, but not without some drama first. After the bus had left with its first group of students everyone was standing in the pouring rain huddled up to their friends praying to God that the rain would just please stop already. Once the bus finally came back after like 3 hours (I exaggerate), shit went down. As soon as the doors opened everyone pushed into the bus. And when I say pushed into the bus I want you to imagine college kids just pushing their bodies forward against other wet bodies to try and get on a bus that won’t fit all of them anyway. At one point I don’t think my feet were even touching the ground. I was squished between two of my friends and we were all holding onto each other to make sure no one got left behind. So, needless to say I’m not quite sure how I managed to hoist myself onto the little steps of the bus. It was all a big mad blur. And the funny thing was all these people were fighting to get on the bus when no body was actually getting into the bus. They just wanted to tip it over into the street? So, my friends that were in front of me let go of me so they could get on and my other friend and I were on our own. I somehow got to the steps, but then out of no where I walked right out of my very wet shoe! I had to scramble to put it back on before I got trampled! It was a good thing that idiots were just pushing the bus on not actually using their brains to get on. During the process of rescuing my shoe, however, I lost my friend’s hand! Once I got to the top of the bus stair I turned around to get her but she was still a few more people back. I reached out my hand, but she couldn’t quite grab it and after struggling for a few second while pissing off the people in front of her I’m sure, she yelled “go on without me! I’ll make it!” So, I turned around and found my other friends at the back of the bus. Just as I got my extremely wet self situated in my seat my lost friend slid in next to me. We looked at each other and sighed a sigh of relief. We were all safe and accounted for. I now know what it might have been like during the Titanic disaster or at least the glorified James Cameron version. As I mentioned not that many people were smart enough to stop pushing and actually get in the bus and when the bus driver finally pulled away there were still several seats open. Very Titanic-esc. We all had a good laugh about it on the way home, but seriously next time keep calm and just get on the damn bus!

Drake University Street Painting 2012! What a blast!

Drake University Street Painting 2012! What a blast!

EPIC.

"That said, I won’t be attending The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction 2012 Ceremony and I respectfully decline my induction as a member of Guns N’ Roses to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

I strongly request that I not be inducted in absentia and please know that no one is authorized nor may anyone be permitted to accept any induction for me or speak on my behalf. Neither former members, label representatives nor the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame should imply whether directly, indirectly or by omission that I am included in any purported induction of “Guns N’ Roses”.”

Well well looks like we finally have our answer. The world was a buzz yesterday as it caught wind of Axl Rose’s final decision. But not only has he said he’s not coming to the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. He said that he doesn’t want to be in the hall of fame! Which poses a big WTF from me. Okay Axl I get it. You don’t want to see the other guys. Fine. But to not be in the hall of fame at all?! Take it from me. Axl Rose might be one bat shit crazy man, but he is a beyond brilliant artist. In his prime he had one of the best voices in rock n’ roll. He had such a stage presents. There is no one quite like Axl Rose. Maybe even better than his voice was his lyrics. And I’m not just talking about Jungle and Sweet Child. I’m talking about the whole gnr catalogue. If you have ever taken the time to actually listen to it all, Axl’s lyrics are almost perfect. Behind his form of poetry there is a sense of fear, anger, and hurt. Axl didn’t have a great childhood. There is a reason he is the way he is. His music is full of scary pain and let me just say it is genius. I hope he is better today though. I think he is. He is happier now and if being in the gnr now makes him happy then so be it. I don’t hate Axl. I don’t hate Slash either. I love them both equally. I remember when I first discovered them. I was in 8th grade and as I often times do I started obsessing over them. The original Guns N’ Roses changed my life. They taught me about getting my anger out and how to find the poetic and beautiful meanings hidden in rock songs. They are the reason why I am here writing this. They are the reason I am studying to one day be a music journalist. They opened the gate for me and for that I will always love them no matter how much they hate each other now. And Axl will always hold a special place in my heart. He is off his rocker. And he is my favorite rocker. He taught me about music and lyrics. He changed my life. Now I know that there are a lot of people out on the internet right now that are bashing Axl. Calling him a dick and an idiot. Begging for the original 5 to reunite. But the truth is right in Axl’s long (hilarious) and actually polite for him letter. He says that gnr is like a divorce and sometimes you just have to let it be. Do I have a recurring dream that Slash, Izzy, Duff, Steven, and Axl will reunite and I will be the one inducting them into the hall of fame instead of ugh Green Day? HELLO! But the truth is (and I know it deep in my heart) that it will never happen. It’s not suppose to happen. Some perfect acts only stay perfect for so long. Unfortunately bands aren’t made to last forever unless you are Bon Jovi or the Stones. There will never be another band like Guns N’ Roses. They were one of a kind (I use the past tense here because the gnr now is not the real gnr). They were one hell of a kind and that is why they will always be my favorite. As for Axl’s letter. Yeah it has pissed a lot of people off. And yeah just like Axl says in the letter he knows there will be fallout. But I have to ask you this: Did we really expect anything less from W. Axl Rose? I mean come on. This letter is EPIC. And I’m not talking about the type of I’m gonna piss so many people off type of epic. I’m talking about rock music epic. I didn’t expect anything less from the man who jumped in crowds and took people down. This is Axl at his best and whether you admit it or not this is why we love that man. He just sent a piece of rock history to the hall of fame! It will go down in history just like the Sex Pistols’s letter. Here is my request and I really hope the rock hall takes it into consideration. Hang that letter right next to gnr’s plaque. Axl won’t be in the hall of fame but his EPICness will be. Brilliant. Absolutely Brilliant.

If you want to check out Axl’s full letter he sent to the hall of fame click on the link above. It is definitely worth a read! And don’t forget that the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame induction is this Saturday! I will be posting all about what went down next week! And for the sake of this role we are on I hope it is simply EPIC.

Guess What!

Do I have a story! Last week news broke that Aerosmith was going on tour this summer and it was starting in Minnesota on June 16th! I was really hoping to get tickets with my mom. My mom is my concert buddy because we have the same taste in music. Duh. Tickets went on sale Saturday and I called her Sunday reminding her to look up tickets and she did her mom oh I don’t know hunny I’ll think about it bla bla bla. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and I went on ticketmaster to see what tickets were left. They actually had some good seats left (um come on more people need to be going to this concert!), so I called my mom back trying to convince her that it was her destiny to see Aerosmith before the band and she gets too old. She kept telling me to look at a certain section for tickets and I kept trying to explain to her that is not how ticketmaster works. She was obsessed with section 110. She kept saying that she had heard they were really good seats and I continued to tell her that ticketmaster doesn’t let you pick they just randomly give you tickets depending on what price you say you want. She responded with oh they must be sold out then. Okay mother act like you know everything about everything. She said try looking at section 110 row R. Mom I can’t do that. Oh well that is where our seats are. I bought them yesterday at 10 a.m. when they went on sale. Your Welcome. Best. Mom. Ever. Steven, Joe, I’ll see you boys June 16th in Minneapolis.

Woa! It’s been a long time!

Wow I have been so busy lately! Last week was spring break for me and my family got a new puppy so I didn’t have a lot of free time between playing with him and making sure he didn’t shit in the house (which he did of course). So, here I am back at school ready to finish out the last remaining monthish of my first year of college. I feel so grown up saying that. Yay. But as every student in the history of forever will tell you it is never fun coming back to school after a nice break. Professors keep throwing around the final project thing. Yuck. Plus it is really nice outside so no one wants to sit in class. And to top things off I just had to leave an adorably wonderful puppy to come back to school in Iowa. So, while I was on Twitter during class (I am a journalism major we are encouraged to check Twitter during class) I noticed a lot of buzz going on about Aerosmith touring. Sure enough I headed to rollingstone.com and there it was! Aerosmith is going on a North American tour this summer! How exciting! But you want to know what is even more exciting about it? It starts June 16th in Minneapolis of all places! Minneapolis is in Minnesota…which is where I live. Score! My mom and I are already trying to get tickets. Yeah that’s right I said my mom. Anyway I really want to go because I mean who knows how many more times this will happen. If Steven and Joe have set aside their differences for the time being then um yeah they have to go on tour! They aren’t getting any younger here lets be honest I need to see them before it’s too late! Kicking off the tour in Minnesota is a sign! I die a little inside everyday one of the great rock bands grows a day older. That’s a day longer to making it almost impossible that I will never get to see them. I would encourage anyone to go see Aerosmith this summer! They are hitting all of the major cities in the U.S. I seriously can’t contain my excitement. I’m just so glad Steven and Joe like each other again. For now anyway. Although there is a lot of time between now and June 16th. We will just have to wait and see.
